I Found an ABANDONED 5HP Briggs and Stratton Generator | Can we Make it Run?
Enter the Rascal charity raffle here: www.gopowersports.com/cars-ca...

This 1970s Briggs and Stratton 5HP generator had been sitting in my abandoned shop when I bought the new CarsandCameras headquarters in a damp corner with a thick layer of dust on it. The engine was stuck. Can we make it run and use it as a mini bike engine?

Thanks for Watching!

I have 2 1979(ish) Sears minibikes that have sat since prior to 1990. The engine was snagged for our tiller but the other is still original to the bike. Last year was the first time in over 30 years that the engine has been turned over. To my shock it spun! I hope I can get it restored.

I know it's probably too late now but from the quick look at your engine block it's more than likely a 5hp Briggs..... most of the 3.5-4hp blocks didn't have a detachable side wrap cylinder cowling and they have a cast in flat area on that portion of the cylinder where the sheet metal shroud is on yours. And BTW a points ignition system on these or most manufactures across the board with a magneto/points setup will definitely not have spark if you have a incorrect timing to the magneto magnets and the breaker points. So it will try charging the condenser at the wrong time and hence no sparks! Lol well we must be old if you remember working on the old Briggs Vacu-jet carbs on the old 82000 - 111900 model series or the old Pulsa-jet carbs with the metal or plastic in the 80s Air powered governor systems! With the automatic heat/vacuum operated choke butterflies you needed to keep the big long single Air filter bolt In the carb while you ran it without a air filter. Otherwise the choke butterfly would flip backwards and it would suck gas up through the bolt hole for the air filter in the carb as well. Those were fun times! WTF happened??? That's when we still had leaded gasoline too LMAO! I hated the old windup or straight pull starters where the rope was in a vertical line with the crank shaft not horizontal like they have been on everything else since then.

Guys, along with the additive for the oil, you need to use engine oil that has it in it also. Because if you just use regular oil it has detergent in it. It will wash away the additives that prevent the cam shaft failure. Only stuff I know is break in oil.

FYI - Why is it important that generators run 3600? 3600rpm = 60 revs per second = 60 cycles per second current or 60 Hz. Less or more can damage equipment.

I had an old Briggs & Stratton like that that had no cover after pull cord broke on it it was my ladder hoist for putting shingles on the roof and I ran it for 10 years like that before it finally blew up. The head was white from running so hot. I bet you I boosted a million bundles with that old Briggs & Stratton. 20 years In total I got out of that little motor and it was worked hard its hole life with very few oil changes...

  • MrGixxer1300r

Great find, and work. That thing should be a really good piece. I would not be surprised if it has a steel sleave, a heavier crank, and now a updated ignition. I'd put a 22mm round slide on it, a pipe and put it in a minibike!!! Again great work guys!

Just use Rotella oil for zinc!!!!

  • Grouchee Oldman
    Grouchee Oldman

For classic car applications, the guys at Shell often recommend Rotella, and although it’s thought of as a diesel engine oil, its high-zinc formulation that’s made to fight scuffing on metal-to-metal contact is just what older engines need. So make sure the oil you select for your classic engine is from a quality brand and that it has plenty of ZDDP. You don’t have to guess though, you can get a recommendation from Shell by calling 1-800-BEST-OIL.

Question- Before you took the generator part off, could you have ran a electric motor off it? Wouldn’t that be COOL! The torque and power from a electric motor been powered on site by a gas engine. No need to have a clutch from the engine. The Briggs wouldn’t need to go over 3600 rpm and get just as much power as you need to run the electric motor all the time. Is that possible?
